I would love to know more about how to implement math workshop in a 5th grade classroom. Does this only work if you use the Everyday Math series? Is it possible to only do it a few times a week? I teach 3 sections of math with only 45 minutes each in which to do it. I have been trying to figure out a way to make it work. I love the idea and I think I could reach more kids using it. THanks and I look forward to hearing more!

Hi Kim,
You can use a math workshop format in any math program. Whay program are you using? If I had 45 minutes per day I would modify math workshop. On day 1, I would teach my overview lesson whole group and have the students break into small groups to practice that skill. On Day 2, I would have 3 or 4 math activities set up. One of those activities would directly correlate with Day 1's lesson. That would be my teacher led rotation. The other 2 or 3 rotations could be practice in any amth area and math games. Most math math series have math games and enrichment activities that you could use for your rotations. With the 45 minute time frame. I would have all rotations set up and ready to go on Day 2. If you allow 12 minutes at each of 3 rotations, you will have 9 minutes to explain rotations and clean up. Monday and Wednesday could be your Day 1. Tuesday and Thursday caould be your Day 2. Friday would be a great day to have a reflection or discussion of that week's math, teach new games or assess.

I read about the math workshop on Beth Newingham's sight and found her link to your page. I have 30 students this year and found that there was a lot of down time for the kids who finished the math journal or practice work while others needed more help. I have 1 hour each day for math. I have one rotation with me which is the lesson and practice, one with an assistant that is some sort of computation practice, and the third group (problem of the day--math journal)led by the special ed teacher. The time went so fast for me. What is the best way to set up the lesson rotation? I read the above post which sounds like it would work, but I am just wondering the best way to teach the lesson in such a short time frame. Maybe I am doing way too much and the students not enough. I do not have Everyday Math. Thank you! I look forward to reading and learning more from your site.

It is hard to fit everything in one hour. How long is your mini-lesson? Mine are 5 to 10 minutes. It is an introduction to what they will learn that day. If you have not read "Getting to Got It" by Betty Garner, I highly recommend it. I start with an example and ask what they notice. Her book has a whole section on these questioning techniques. This allows time to clear up misinformation. I time my rotations for 12 minutes with an extra minute for clean up and moving. Sometimes we finish the whole page sometimes we do not. If I'm working with struggling students we may only do 3 problems. We go slow, use manipulative and discuss what we are doing. My middle group usally finishes most of the page. My high group may start half way down the page and I may extened their problems using larger numbers or more steps. My goal is to make sure these kids understand the math not finish whole pages. If we do not finish a page, the kids either X it off or write skipped. If I think it is important to finish, it can be part of a rotation the next day. It is hard to stop being the instructor and letting the kids do more. I think you will find that if you start your lesson with a question like "what do you notice, tell me what you already know about this, what patterns did you see?, your mini lesson will be much shorter most of the time and to the point. Just remember to accept all answers and then go back and direct students to what you want them to notice. Sometimes you will see they are way off in their perceptions and it takes more time. On those days I cut my rotations to 10 minutes. Sometimes I have to revisit those pages the following day. It took me seven years to get where I am - just keep working at it. No one knows your kids like you do, so change things up as you see fit. I really admire you for trying math workshop with 30 kids, that's a large class! Let me know how it is going. I'll help in any way I can.

I haven't started the workshop yet because I want to make sure I know what I am doing first! The problem that I am having is that we have Saxon math and since it is a continuation of several lessons I am not sure how to begin. Any ideas would be helpful. I am getting all of my games in order and organized too.

I found your site with the link to Beth Newingham's website. I've been experimenting with math workshop on Fridays. It has been trial and error! We are using a spiral curriculum. My biggest problem is the noise level in my small classroom. I am having trouble teaching my teacher-led group over the other two groups. Also, I have a couple of students with LD and ADD that are distracted by the noise and activity in the classroom. Any ideas in that area? I have no assistants in class so it is just me.

Hi Alice, I have been teaching for over 20 years and want to starting using Math Workshop in my second grade classroom. It just seems so overwhelming, where do I begin? My biggest problem is time. We used to get 1 hour for math now we are only getting 40 minutes which isn't enough time. Do you have any suggestions how I can start using Math Workshop successfully? Thanks James :)

Hi Kim,
Everyone has this problem, including me, when they start out. I have it at the beginning of each year. Right now I have a table captain in each group. They have a clipboard with a form that lists the days of the week across the top and the group members names down the side. If someone talks loudly or is off task, the captain puts a tally next to their name. The captains take their job very seriously. I talk to them ahead of time and they know if they don't keep their group quiet or at least put tallies on the chart they lose the privledge of being captain. Those kids who get no tallies collect a ticket form me for a future auction. You can give stickers or any award you think reasonable. Those who get one tally do not get a ticket. Two tallies they lose five minutes of recess. Three tallies they write a note home and miss five minutes of recess. If I notice someone is being really loud or fooling around, they are sent to time out for that rotation (only exception is the rotation with me). You may want to back up and have a couple days where all rotations are independent and you can just monitor noise level as they practice proper voices. I know a special ed teacher (emotionaly impaired) who holds the math wworkshop as a "reward". If they get noisy or off task they go back to working quietly at their desks. She only had to use this a few times. Her kids love math workshop. I hope this helps. Good luck and let me know if this works.

Hi James,
There are a couple of ways you can use your 40 minutes. first, you can present your mini lesson (10 minutes)and have all groups work on the same activity as you monitor(15 minutes) and for the last 15 minutes have 3 activities (one teacher led and the other two independent games or practice. These activities can be used over three days so that each group can get to an independent activity. Second, present your mini lesson (10 minutes)and have two different rotations set up(about 15 minutes each) Two groups would be working on the same rotation and you would help both groups. The other rotation would be independent and two groups would be working at that activity. They would switch activities after 15 minutes. You would then work with the new groups and the first two groups would do the independent activity. Your third option would be: Day 1 -teach your mini lesson, have kids gather in their groups and work on the same activity while you monitor. Day 2 have kids gather in their groups, have 3 rotations set up, one teacher led, the other two independent activities. Each rotations last 10 - 12 minutes. I think the most important aspect of workshop is for kids to hear each other talk about their solutions. Being able to differentiate the activity depending on a certain group's needs is also a benefit. I hope this works. It's a shame you are locked in to 40 minutes. What program do you use? Alice my school is using the 2007 Houghton Mifflin Math in grades K-4. I am not sure what they are using in 5-6. I signed up to be on the committee for a new math series. Our school district is looking to find a K-12 program. I do not like HM because it jumps around and everyone complains there is not enough practice. Can you suggest a series that you like?

I love the program I am using, Everyday Math. It's not a cheap program and the district has to be committed to buying the manipulatives and consumables. Let me check with some of my cohorts in other districts and see what they like.

Hi I found out the other day that EveryDay Math is one of the series we will be looking at. I also just found out my district hired a Math Consultant from the area who will be working with the committee. I was also informed that she is coming to observe me on November 3. URGH! I have always wanted to use the Math Workshop approach to teaching Math, just never got around to do it and now with this observation coming up I want to do incorporate this model this week. We are currently working on place value do you have any suggestions for me. I want to start before she comes in, I do not want to look like I do not know what I am doing. I was thinking of having 5 stations with four students at each station. Do you suggest grouping the children by ability? Would you have any suggestions for the 5 different groups using place value? Thank you so much. Wish you were closer. :)

Thanks Alice! I don't know anyone who still uses it or I would suggest a school for you to look for. When I teach a new concept there might be 2 or 3 problems in the set that have to do with that concept. The rest of the problems are review from previous sets. I like the idea of the students having to always review but then they really don't get enough practice with the new stuff unless I create something. Some sets do have a supplemental in the back of the book that contains 20 or so problems on one concept and I use that whenever they are available for a grade. I hope that helps you get the idea of it. It's a continuous book so there are no chapters or units. But of course when my students go to 6th grade they use McGraw Hill which upsets parents because it is so different than Saxon and the students have a hard time adjusting.

Have you ever used this? I know you stated that you ability group. Are the stations differentiated between ability groups? I have observed a teacher in our district (IPSD 204) but would love to see how someone else does it. Where is your school district? I'm in Naperville, Illinois. What recommendations would you have for first grade? There is always a group of children that are struggling with reading as well as reading for meaning. It doesn't work to have a worksheet rotation for them. The other problem is what do the children do who finish their worksheets before the timer goes off? Thanks for your help!

I just found your site. It is great!

I am in the process of trying to start a math workshop after Thanksgiving. I know it is late in the year, but my math program stinks! It is Trail Blazers. I have one hour for math. That hour is split by my special. So it is 30 minutes, special, 30 minutes. Although this is hard, I feel that the first 30 minutes can be used as the minilesson and the 2nd 30 minutes could be used as rotations. The trail blazers program really does not go with my states standards and grade level expectations. I was thinking of maybe trying this:
Mon (whole class)- Activating strategy, build backgraound, mini lesson on the math packets I'm going to make up and intro a new game
Tues, wed, thrus- Ciuld you give me suggestion
Fri (whole class) teach students how to answer word problems (data sheet and write the answer in paragrapgh for, focusing on tranisitions)

Please help me! Trail blazers is really bad and I do not like using it. It confuses the students.

I am very impressed with your math workshop! I have been teaching elementary school for 12 years. Out of the 12 years, I have taught 9 years of first grade and the remaining 3 years have been in 5th grade. In first grade, the focus has been reading and writing workshops in our school systems. I have tried to utilize the same strategies, but I have been unable to get it going. I just want to say that I really appreciate you sharing your teaching craft to teachers across the world. However, do you think that I can utilize this math workshop style at the intermediate level? Do you know of any intermediate teachers who have utilized math workshop in their math instruction? If so, please inform me because I am very bored and frustrated teaching math the "normal" way. I want some excitement and an outstanding learning experience for my students. I love that you have posted your plans for the first 3 units. Our district also uses the EM series. In the past I have tried an approach like this, but can't seem to get it up and running effectively. I feel like once I get everything together for the unit I am on, it is already time to start planning for the next unit!
Would it be possible for you to post your plans for the additional third grade units? It would give me something to start from and then I could create my own based off of yours. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks so much for all of your ideas.

It's nice to meet you. I too am having trouble with my Math curriculum. I was granted $ this summer to purchase Everyday Math products and was given permission to teach with it this year. I have tried and tried to use the Math Workshop style of teaching but until now didn't fully understand and still have questions. Hopefully you can answer a few of them. I only have 60 minutes to teach Math which was mandated by the state. The rest of my time is consumed by Reading, RtI, etc. How should I schedule my time accordingly? Nect, for my 3 rotations, could I have, (1) teacher led, (2) computer activities, and (3) games? Or instead of computer activities should I have some sort of independent worksheet type practice for the students? Thank you for all your wonderful work and I really believe you should publish a book on this subject!!!

HI Alice! I wanted to tell you that you have been an amazing Help this year for my Everyday Math Time! To be honest, math is my weakest area, but this year I feel that my students are "Gettting it" and I owe it all to the workshop style of presenting information. With that said, I know how hard you have worked on getting lessons ready and written for your stations... I have been using your sample plans for the third grade EDM and have felt very successful. I would never discredit your work, but I wasn't sure if you would be willing to display or email your lessons that you have created for units 3-9? If not, I understand. Its just that I use those so much as a way in to my teaching! I would even be willing to PAY for your hard Work!! :) Please let me know! Again, thanks for all you do!

Hi,
I have taught 5th grade for the past 7 years. My district uses EDM. As part of the new Common Core we purchased the CCSS edition. As you know, the evaluation model has changed with CC. One of the goals I set was to learn about and implement differentiated math. I was excited to see that you had some sample 5th grade lessons on your site. Unfortunately (for me) it led to an "under construction" page. Do you have any advice for how to start? I have about 75 minutes in my math block. I am excited to hear your thoughts.
